Sustainable Cattle Standard

Dear friends of the Sustainable Agriculture Network,

In 2007, the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN) Secretariat began the process of analyzing the  technical and scientific inputs of the GAMMA Group (Ganadería Ambiental y Medio Ambiente) based within CATIE (Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigation y Enseñanza), and jointly created the first Standard for Sustainable Cattle Ranching. The goal was to develop a voluntary mechanism resulting in Rainforest Alliance Certified™ certification of cattle farming operations.

In August 2009, the Secretariat presented the first draft of the SAN Standard for Sustainable Cattle Production Systems. This version was submitted to the international public consultation process which meets the requirements outlined in the “ISEAL Alliance Code of Good Practice for Setting Social and Environmental Standards” (http://www.isealalliance.org/). 

We are starting a second round of public consultation as of January 11, 2010 which will last through March 11, 2010. The SAN Secretariat invited you to participate actively in this second round of consultation. If you have not registered for providing comments, please do so here.
