SAN’s International Standards Committee analyzed during four meeting days in January 2013 the first draft of SAN’s Sustainable Agriculture Standards for agriculture and cattle producer groups and farms developed by Oliver Bach, Director-Standards & Policy, with the support of the SAN technical team and inputs from other SAN stakeholders.
The main topics with various inputs and feedback presented were on the conservation of ecosystems and wildlife protection, gender equality, the new list of banned and to be phased out pesticides.
Additionally, topics discussed were around productivity and product quality, living wage, integrated livestock management, additional criteria for rice cultivation, strengthened criteria on climate change adaptation and mitigation and a new step-wise scoring system. All inputs received add towards a first draft to be submitted for public consultation from April 10th to June 30th, 2013 with the support of regional and local representatives for workshops in 20 countries.
The meeting was successful due to the joint effort and hard work of the entire team with participants from the SAN Secretariat and Rainforest Alliance.
